5 Simple Flower Care Tips to Prolong the Life of Your Bouquet
Nothing lifts a room like a fresh bouquet, but the disappointment of a wilting display after three days is all too common. By following a few simple, professional techniques you can dramatically extend the beautiful life of your blooms. While we handle all the rigorous cold-chain care in our studio, your home care routine will continue that good work. Let's dive into the most common mistakes and easy fixes we teach every customer when they leave our store.
First, always re-cut the stems at a sharp angle before you arrange them. Use a clean, sharp knife or clippers rather than blunt scissors that can crush the water channel. Cut off at least two centimetres while the stems are submerged in a basin of lukewarm water to keep air bubbles from forming inside the vascular system. Remove any foliage that will sit below the waterline, because those decomposing leaves will breed bacteria that may block water uptake.
Second, use properly mixed flower food rather than old wives' tales you might discover on social media. A pinch of sugar, a drop of bleach, or an aspirin tablet are not a science-backed equivalent. Our commercial flower food contains a precise balance of sugar, acidifier, and microbicide. If you have lost the sachet, dissolve a quarter teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of household lemon juice or clear vinegar in a vase of fresh, cool tap water. Always make sure your vase is prewashed thoroughly even between changes.
Third, change the water consistently every 2-3 days, not merely when it looks cloudy. At the same time, re-cut stems once more by a small margin and remove any petals that are already browning or softening, as they sap energy from the younger parts of the bloom. Give your flowers some clear space as well; too many stems wedged together increase friction and damage. You can keep your bouquet fresh overnight by moving it away from fruit bowls, direct sunlight, TV sets and radiators.
Fourth, mist the petals in dry climates to keep them crisp, and avoid spraying any bloom directly to its center where moisture may cause rot. And if you receive our signature gift box with hydrated cotton wrap, leave the cellophane and aqua foam intact until you place it into your own vase, unless you specifically want to follow our quick flower-food-immersed method for loose stems. These small rituals — free of miracles and shortcuts — are what separate a bedraggled week-old stem from an arrangement that still turns heads after eight days. Your blooms have already travelled far to reach you, so treat them with that final touch of respect.
